Sleeps Under Beams is an independent transatlantic music project, started in 2020 by the Netherlands-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Drew Campbell and US-based lyricist Lisa Ann Swain, who met on a collaboration website for composers, soon joined by vocalist Anna Rea, to strike the perfect balance.
Floating through a plethora of likewise dream pop proposals, and clearly influenced by early 4AD roster’s pioneers, Lycia, Autumn’s Grey Solace, The Sundays, Lush, and Slowdive, to name a few, the band can distinguish itself with an elegant and deft juxtaposition of finely sculpted intricate shimmering guitar textures with subtly dark undertones, and haunting vocalizations, at once delicate and angelic yet imbued with intense expressive feelings, engulfed in a heart-wrenching storytelling.
The latest in a series of singles to build up the momentum for the release of the trio’s second album, “Glossed Souls”, through the DIY label Subscotia Records, “Love Always, Veronika” features extremely sad lyrics that describe a person leaving a relationship, despite being head over heels in love, without saying goodbye, through a lens of protecting the other from the pain of witnessing death.
The song unfolds steady, swaying mid-tempo drum patterns and humming bass lines, rippled by the seething and shivering crystalline chiming of atmospheric guitar melodies, layered with ghostly synth swathes, to achingly encompass powerful, melancholic female vocals, stirring the soul with a penetrating emotional depth that desperately falls and celestially soars and flutters.
