WL//WH Track Of The Day MALVENN GORYCZ
Malvenn Gorycz is the collaborative project of one of the most well respected cult underground electronic acts: Northern Brittany-based Mode in Gliany (Boris Volant) and Brussels-based Ame de bue (Dasz).
After last month’s 3-song debut “La Profondeur des Mondes”, the duo are going to release the 4-track E.P., “Des Ombres Blanches,” via German imprint Circonstances A., described as “a versatile work that navigates brilliantly between Berlin minimal house and the most challenging cold wave.”
The early excerpt, “Nous les vivants”, is a song about warped ambition, destroyed emotions, and loss of life.
At first, I didn’t realize the Berlin minimal house hint, but as a deep listener in the early 2000s of pioneer labels such as Perlon or Playhouse, I perhaps realized the almost funk-out, elastic, danceable low-end leanings.
The track bounces its way through stripped-back yet rattling, dry, punchy rhythm patterns, fueled by wonky, buzzy bass grooves, combining with cold, askew synth textures, heightened by poignant, piercing trumpet layers, to build a melancholic and dramatic hypnotic ambience, laced with a surreal detached strain, encapsulated by Mode in Gliany‘s distinctive, both restless and breathy, brooding vocal delivery.
The paired visuals combine the thought-provoking lyrics of “Nous les vivants” with movie scenes pulled from “Un homme qui dort”, co-directed by Bernard Queysanne and Georges Perec in 1974, the story of the empty days of a speechless student who wanders through the streets of Paris, pondering the maze of life under a changing gradient of black-and-white perception, evoking a sense of confusion and alienation at the hands of separation from the masses and non-conformity.
