WL//WH Video of the Day: DEGHERL “WishAir” (Official Music Video)

WL//WH Video of the Day DEGHERL

DegHerl, the Bologna, Italy-based new wave / post-punk five-piece, made of Raffaele Salinari (Vocals, Guitar), Daniela Gullotta (Vocals, Synths), Alessio Franzoni (Guitars), Antonio Tronchin (Bass, Synths, Programming, Arrangement), and Gianluca Panici (Drums), unveils the second excerpt, “WishAir,” from the approaching early October release of their anticipated self-titled debut album, “DegHerl,” paired with a DIY Official Music Video.

Crafting elegant and elaborate post-punk vibes with balanced forays into new-wave and dark-psych dimensions, Deg Herl (sounds like The Girl) play an intriguing game of phonetics with their lyrics and name, to create real imaginal stories that transport the listener into the unexplored land of analogies.

Nervous, pulp-like guitars face off against enveloping bass and keyboards, evoking a sonic universe where the dark tones of Tuxedomoon and The Sound merge with the neurotic, dadaist — and almost playful — verve of the B-52’s.

The intricate and intriguing “WishAir” rushes with driving drum beats trotting ceaselessly along with ominous stretching bass throbs underneath a twilit swirl of billowing layers of anxious and persistent, achingly sparkling guitar echoes, laced with ghostly, wooshy keyboard blankets, to surround a sensual bilingual vocal interplay, blending thrill-seeking male spoken words with dainty, elated female finesse, into an alarming countdown to take-off.

The use of two languages is justified by the narrative frame itself: a recurring erotic dream set on an airline, where a filtered flight attendant’s voice repeats instructions like a refrain, acting as a counterpoint to the male voice.

Retro-futuristic visuals transform DegHerl with red and blue animations, as they perform “WishAir” amid an airline-themed fantasy. The backstory is an extension of the colorful illustration and includes busy airport scenes, secret X-ray baggage scans, and mile-high fascinations that sync seamlessly with the seduction of the soundtrack.
