With a sparse string of singles under his belt since 2023, True Blue is the enigmatic “bedroom pop” endeavour of Johannes Karg from Munich, Germany.
The Bavarian musician delivers a well-trodden captivating, atmospheric guitar pop, nestled somewhere between the jangly, dreamy breeziness of the late 2000s-mid-2010s Captured Tracks label era, 80s new wave reflections, and like-minded contemporaries such as Cathedral Bells, Hibou and most of the Spirit Goth roster, peppered with twangy washes of surf rock.
Dealing with a changing relationship, the latest tinkling earworm of a single, “Indifference,” flits away through fast-paced rhythms and snakingly rubbery bass lines, cutting through a haze of tinny strums and wandering plinking guitar layers that wobble and rev up wistfully alongside sad, anxious vocals telling a loved one, ‘I won’t stay, I’ll run away this time.’
