On April 17, Manic Depression Records released the debut LP “Dive into the Darkness” by the darkwave act Midnight Poetry, based in Athens, Greece. This new band is yet another talented name emerging from the nearly “orgasmic” darkwave scene of Greece, which consistently offers some great acts. This marks their excellent debut, featuring eight tracks, including one surprise collaboration that adds a delightful twist. Although they may be the “new blood” on the scene, the two members of the band are not new to the musical world.
Cleopatra Kaido (vocals, lyrics) has previously released two albums: “Artificial Galaxy” (2013), created with Drama Queen (a post-punk, goth, alternative band), and “System Anomaly” (2020) with Meat Injection (a synth wave, post-punk, dark electro outfit). She has performed at numerous live shows and collaborated with various musicians. Now, she returns with renewed strength, transforming her worries into creativity and inspiration, with John Spanos by her side.

John Spanos (music) has released five personal albums and several tracks in compilations from the goa and psychedelic trance scene, including works under the name Radical Distortion. He also has a solo project as John Spanos, focusing on ambient, chill out, and future-garage music. With numerous appearances at festivals and events abroad, John is adding his own unique touch to these musical genres, with Cleopatra Kaido by his side.
Midnight Poetry is a talented and experienced group with two musicians who, despite coming from different genres, have created something remarkable together, sounding as a band for years. The overall sound is high-quality electronic darkwave, which does not conceal their musical explorations in other directions. Check the official video of “Black Hole”, and I’ll tell you more in a bit…
…initially starting with a dark electronic song, Midnight Poetry ventured into even darker and more pure electro-gothic landscapes next…“Dracula’s Poison”.
In Midnight Poetry‘s music, you will experience intense trance passages that are skillfully integrated into the darkwave sound. You’ll also encounter subtle hints of techno, all woven together within the band’s unique dark electronic spectrum. The orchestrations are precise and purposeful, leading to a powerful climax that ultimately ventures into the…unknown.
Cleopatra effortlessly captures the emotional depth and enchanting quality that this challenging music demands. She does not struggle with any vocal technique issues; instead, she delivers her performances with clarity, effectively expressing her dreams, nightmares, and observations. This remarkable focus demonstrates the dedication that comes from honing one’s natural talent–her voice.
Midnight Poetry has finally released an impressive debut album on a reputable label, and the prospects for their next project look promising (with the dark undertone). I highly recommend giving “Dive into the Darkness” LP a listen, as it reflects a deep understanding of the essence of darkwave music.
Keep up with Midnight Poetry:
