Video Of The Day Vague Phonique
Vague Phonique, the Stuttgart, Germany-based Dark Wave band made of founders Valerio Kuhl (synths, vocals, lyrics) and Mathias Völkel (guitars), rounded off, since May 2025, by the soulful vocal delivery of Nina Gijon, drops an Official Video by Roland Schymik for “Stadt Unter Wasser / City Under Water”, taken from “Cut EP”, released as limited edition vinyl via Bruno Kramm‘s renowned label Danse Macabre Records.
The dream-inspired, melodic and danceable Dark Wave introspection of “Stadt Unter Wasser” (City Under Water), explores sinking, dizzying thoughts and feelings of abandonment, perfectly embodies the intense and fluctuating melancholic, pain-filled emotions, achingly sculpted by a sparkling, evocative guitar work and icy forlorn synth lines, lifted into the uncomfortable shadows by a both clattering and throbbing drum programming and slithering, bubbling low ends, while wistful, passionate female vocals brood with heartfelt male backups, to become increasingly surrounded by a swirling menace of buzzing distortion.
In the Official Video directed by Roland Schymik, Vague Phonique performs “Stadt Unter Wasser” against a modern urban intersection at night. The clip begins with Nina Gijon and Valerio Kuhl running up the stairs from a subterranean area. Halfway through, a transparent underwater overlay, by Helmut Weipert, transforms the black and white vision of the duo in the city into a less severe, fish-swimming, blue mindset.
