The Occasion is the home-recording solo project of the German Atmospheric Death Metal musician and composer Vanessa Funke born out of her devotion to the classic Post Punk and New Wave sound from the late 70s/early 80s, fresh from the release of the debut Self-Titled album “The Occasion”, from which is taken the Music Video for “Motionless.”
A bouncy Synth-pop number, where a dark soul stands “Motionless” with nowhere to run and hide, races through a crisp jittery drum programming and chugging bass pulses to flow under icy anxious and breezy tinkling synth flourishes, while softly bleak, discomforted vocals, surrounded by dramatic glowing washes, deliver a haunting confession about being spiritually blind and numb to all sensation.
The visuals begin by showing the exterior of an old brick apartment building where the German artist sings “Motionless” inside under glitchy and sallow colored filters. Before a beautiful river transition scene plays, a symbolic locked door and a hand in front of the face gesture reveal the afflicted is hiding in fear. After some back-and-forth shots between the vibrant outdoors and a matrix-like interior, a light at the end of a shadowy hallway scene leads to victory.
The Occasion’s debut Self-Titled LP “The Occasion”, is out now on Digital, while the Limited Cassette Edition is on pre-order on Portland, OR‘s Violet Hour Transmissions label Bandcamp.
