“Open Your Eyes” is the first single in five years from Blue Livingroom, the synth-wave/synth-pop side project of Hattiesburg, Mississippi-based musician Warren Ard, better known for his synth-driven post-punk endeavor Detects.
Combining dreamy chillout vibes with 80s-tinged retro-futuristic atmospheres, “Open Your Eyes” is a song about being hired to turn another person’s lie into a better one that others will believe.
Steady plodding programmed beats along with sonorously burbling, bouncy bass lines map out an emotive neon-lit journey into past nostalgia. Simultaneously, melancholic layers of sharp, glowing synths excitedly wail over and illuminate, with glassy, chime-y edges, somber memories that will never come back, encapsulated by soft, aching male vocals sentimentally longing, ‘don’t ever see you anymore.’
