I personally collaborated with another magazine when I first listened to Faunlet, the Romania-based genre-defying music project started in 2011 by the singer-songwriter Peter, which, while cruising between different sound inclinations, from shoegaze and post-punk to doomy gothic-grunge, permanently preserved its distinctive “intimate, emotional, dark” aesthetics.
Actually a three-piece, comprising Peter (guitars, vocals), Iannis (bass) and Andrei (drums), the Bucharest band, named after what “Lolita” author Vladimir Nabokov coined as a young male counterpart to a nymphet, have dropped “In Lust,” the first single since the October 2023 EP, “Elegantly Haunting,” paired with a DIY Official Video.
An obscure, anguished and laceratingly cathartic blast of doomgaze, “In Lust” lyrically uses a sordid bedroom scene to describe the purely physical relationship between an ancient god and the lavender queen.
The track forges dark, heavy, buzzsaw guitar riffs with clanking edges to noisily grind over an anchored foundation of steady stumbling drum beats and gritty, sonorously throbbing bass lines, veering from dire, crushing pinpoint stabs to eruptions of buzzing fuzzed-out expanses, to wash over lustily aching and groaning vocals, unto a final billowing ardent inferno.
In the Official DIY Video, Faunlet performs “In Lust” in the shadows under deep jewel-toned red and blue lights. During symbolic cut scenes, the trio hold the flesh-colored, heart-shaped ‘leaves’ of the mythological flower linked to Cupid’s arrow, the Anthurium, to seamlessly sync with the amorous vibes of the soundtrack.
