WL//WH Track Of The Day: ONLY TEARS “Disaster”

Track Of The Day  ONLY TEARS

In the wake of their more established cohort, The Haunted Youth, to whom they are associated by the local press, the up-and-coming Belgian home recording noise poppers Jeroen Ernest Geboers and Lei Van Gestel blend equal parts 90s power pop/indie rock, buzzing shoegaze, and The Cure’s ethereal wistful romanticism, with enough freshness, personality and pizzazz to pull you in.

It’s not an exception, the Hasselt duo’s third single so far, “Disaster”, which talks about losing your inner self, becoming a person that you don’t want to be, and running away from the truth because of fear.

Fueled by an unmistakable upbeat and soaring entry in “Just Like Heaven” style, snappy urgent programmed beats, woven with snaky warbling bass lines, tightly pound along, engulfed by dazzling sweeps of cascading arpeggiated synths, layered with edgy jagged guitar riffs and crunchy invigorating fuzz-laden blankets, swirling in and out atop urgent, irritated male vocals, brimming with sadness and anger, deadened by gentle, airy longings.
