PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Scotland DIY veteran indie rock /jangle /guitar pop singer-songwriter (Superstar, Boy Hairdressers, BMX Bandits, Linden, Groovy Little Numbers), Joe McAlinden // ジョー・マカリンデン “Beautiful Rain” single

Veteran Scottish DIY auteur and multi-instrumentalist gifts us with a looping and soulful atmospheric ballad that entices with its heartfelt, emotionally engaging vocals and bittersweet glistening piano rolls. Brushed, subtly syncopated percussion tuck with warm, supple bass pulses and raindrops of emotive piano keys to delicately unwind along gentle yet strained, earnest vocals tinged with wistfulness and longing, rising with a charge from sparkling, then energetic, melancholy-drenched guitar riffs and liquid reverent keyboards, toward a devotional ‘beautiful rain’ chorus, where a release of heavy burdens gives way to a timeless, rainbows end view.

  • West Java, Indonesia synth-indie pop trio DEPORTIVO “Faithless” 4th single from the upcoming first “Cosmos” EP

Through 4 singles so far, the Indonesian three-piece has revealed a refined brand of synth-infused indie pop sound that fuses pulsating electronic rhythms with effect-laden guitars and gauzy keyboards, reminiscent of New Order, The Wake, Field Mice or China Crisis. The dreamy, prismatic, sentimental new single is an uplifting song about being true to one’s heart through a faithful, eternal lens of companionship and love. Brisk and crisp trembling rhythmic patterns join with shimmering, echoing guitar melodies, and wonderfully immersive fluid keyboard washes to frame heartfelt layers of dreamy multi-tonal vocals, blending high angsty, longing with soft baritone comfort and vibrant caressing streams, to reassure a loved one that they are never alone.

  • Swansea, UK collaborative shoegaze project fronted by Ant Jones, Frisbees in the Fog “Porth” single [Lavender Sweep Records]

Welsh noisemakers unravel a hazy atmospheric sensorial single that desolately pulses inside dense swirling sheets of whooshy churning, distorted guitars, laced with shimmery, warbling sad reverberations, to encompass vibrant, feathery vocal swathes, torn apart by endless nighttime paths of ghostly memories and lost dreams.
