WL//WH Track Of The Day: FLANNEL “Sway”

WL//WH Track Of The Day FLANNEL

Active since around 2007, with two albums and a bunch of CDr’s also on specialist DIY indie pop labels such as Shiny Happy Records and Cloudberry under his belt, Flannel, the Japanese Dream pop / Shoegaze solo project of Tomohiro Wakai, returns with his first new original song in 14 years, titled “Sway,” following 2012’s “At least I.”

Described as ‘a lo-fi pop track recorded entirely at home—true to form’, the catchy and vibrant “Sway” blends the propulsive Madchester pace of clattering percussive grooves with a reverbed, shimmering Shoegaze haze and high emotional vocal delivery.

The song rolls out urgent shuffling rhythms along with humming, pulsing bass lines, cut through by intervals of crisp, woody bongo drum patterns, layered with chugging, distorted guitar textures, and swirling, edgy synths to surround anxious, dreamy vocals that resound both gloomy and elated, pondering on the inner cycle of light and darkness, and the different contrasting feelings it evokes.
