WL//WH Track Of The Day: BLACK CAB “Strange Attractions”

Track Of The Day  BLACK CAB

Black Cab, the veteran Melbourne-based electronic-rock band formed in 2004, comprised of singer/programmer Andrew Coates and guitarist/keyboardist James Lee, with Wes Holland on drums, drops the new single, a first taste of a new body of work, “Strange Attractions.”

“Strange Attractions” explores the hidden compulsions, identities and obsessions that quietly shape us. Equal parts late-night club soundtrack and psychedelic road movie, the track continues the Cab’s evolution from guitar-driven krautrock into dark, cinematic electronica.

A both surreal and trippy, analogue-synth-laden fantasy about the thrill of danger that comes with ‘meeting’ strangers.

Simultaneously cerebral and cold, yet vibrant and emotional, “Strange Attractions” mesmerizes yet subtly disturbs, with its compelling, frantic wobbling layers of wandering synths infused with arcane charm and relentless ‘motorik’ impulses.

Steadily built, reiterative thudding drum patterns, seesaw burbling bass grooves and edgy distorted churning synth loops, bounce, shake and buzz with simmering and increasingly driving intensity, joined by shivering space-faring washes and subtly squelchy tones, swirling urgently around slightly sung vocals, cloaked in a robotic distortion of both euphoria and shame, battling a ‘this is the last time’ deception.

Black Cab‘s single, “Strange Attractions,” precedes a second release, “We Are Chemistry,” coming in October/November with an album to follow in early 2027.
