WL//WH Track Of The Day: CARAMEL K “We Dive At Dawn”

Track Of The Day  CARAMEL K

Active for a few years, namely since 2021, Caramel K is the cold wave analog synth project of the Scottish musician and composer Calum Finlay.

Following a first album in early 2023, titled “The Sound of Designer Flies (Buzzing Around Your Room),” the Glaswegian artist is going to drop his sophomore full-length, “Decoder Forum,” later in the year, anticipated by a triplet of  2-track singles over the summer.

The latest, the two-tracker, “We Dive At Dawn” b/w “A Dream, Pt. 3,” deploys an extremely stripped-down, raw, hands-on take of 80s-tinged icy and minimal wave templates, replete with an obscure and sinister charm.

An hypnotic, uncanny slice of minimal wave, draped in a secretive haze imbued with moody melancholia, “We Dive At Dawn” unfolds through a stark, sneakily pulsing loop of hushed, tinny mechanical beats and crushed, buzzy bass swells, coursed with lonesome, dreary, abysmal synth blurs and dire, echoing lonesome chimes, to doomily underscore shadowy male spoken words harshly whispering “We Dive at Dawn.”

Even more bare bones, the surreal slow-paced “A Dream, Pt. 3” on the flip.
