WL//WH Video of the Day: BEBALONCAR “Hurt So Bad” (Official Music Video)

Video Of The Day BEBALONCAR

Bebaloncar, the Bologna-based uncompromising, visionary brainchild of veteran musician and staple of the 60s-influenced Italian beat-garage punk scene since the early ’80s (Dachau, Primeteens, Ugly Things, Sciacalli, Bohemians and The Pamela Tiffins), Riccardo Scannapieco, better known as Scanna (lead vocals, guitars, percussion), completed with the essential contribution of Iris Martyr (guitars, backing vocals), and Fab (bass guitar), herald the January 2027 release of their fourth studio album, “Melancholia Drive,” with an Official Music Video by Iris Martyr herself and Francis Indigo for its lead single, “Hurt So Bad.”

Inspired by The Velvet Underground, Jesus & Mary Chain, Suicide, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, among others, the band, which took its name from a 60s/70s Yugoslav, naturalized Italian, cult movie actress, blends New Wave, Psychedelia, Shoegaze and Dark Folk into a melancholic, immersive, and deeply evocative sound.

After last year’s “Love To Death”, the final chapter of Bebaloncar’s “Pain Trilogy,” which started with “Suicide Lovers” (2022) and followed by “Diary of a Lost Girl” (2024), a visceral musical journey through loss, reflection, and rebirth, the band is ready to descend into new shadows of a different kind of darkness.

“Hurt So Bad” is an alternative dark track that blends 1950s nostalgia with a dystopian atmosphere. The sound is driven by heavy, distorted guitars, a hypnotic and detached vocal line, and a cinematic trumpet that leads into a jazz-infused finale. Key influences include the “Bubblegum”-era Mark Lanegan, Death in June, and Little Anthony & The Imperials.

An hypnotic, doom-laden rhythmic stream of scratchy and energetic acoustic guitar strumming, coursed with ominously hovering layers of contained scuzzy, abrasive distortion, relentlessly unfolds, suspended between tension and release, over and over into oblivion. Distant swells of harp-like wailing grooves and a seductive, whimpering trumpet finale add expressive drama and hued chaotic emotions, subdued by blackened, distorted mists, around anxiously wistful, detached vocals, painfully fearing for a loved one into a tight, swirling vortex of squelching and droning frequencies.

In the Official Music Video written and directed by Iris Martyr, co-written, co-directed, and edited by Francis Indigo, and produced by Blue Velvet Production, Bebaloncar interpret “Hurt So Bad” under a dramatic spotlight in sync with the soundtrack. Scanna and Iris are never shown ‘together’ in a single scene, but the strategic use of lights and shadows makes it appear as if they are. Especially at the end, when after becoming furious at a phone call, Iris appears to violently attack Scanna with a hammer while he stands vulnerable in a sacrificial position.

All of this happens under the jarring, dissociative effect of a strobe light that turns an already exaggerated shadow into an all-consuming monster. The clip stirs the soul with deep sadness as Scanna seems like a child who is so helplessly in love with, and defenseless against, the unwarranted wrath of an out-of-control woman. When the whole seems to dissolve, instead it revives, like to end a circle, with hints of the 1964 hit single, “Hurt So Bad” by Little Anthony and The Imperials, the 50s/60s R&B, Doo-Wop, and Soul vocal group from New York City.

Bebaloncar‘s fourth studio album, “Melancholia Drive,” is scheduled for the end of January 2027 via Silverdrop Recordings.
