Toshio Shibata’s Night-Photographs

PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • ORNAMENT // Ornament170 podcast 09

Siberian DJ-producer and Ornament170 label head honcho, Hoji, unrolls an immersive cinematic journey through deep drum & bass, techno-inspired rhythms and atmospheric 170 BPM soundscapes. Heavy bass pressure, dark textures and late-night energy.

  • Amsterdam-based techno /machine-funk /electro DJ-producer and V35 Records label founder Jasper van der Vliet,  JSPRV35 – “Catalyst” from the split EP “Brain Glitch” by Generali Minerali / JSPRV35 [Osu Rhythms]

Dutch dynamic producer seamlessly walks a fine line between Techno and Electro, as he’s deftly shown this week. The killer club-minded, gripping machine funk progression, “Catalyst,” revolves around a relentless, punchy beatdown alongside rapid-fire, glitchy bass cuts, slowly shrouded in eerie, shivering, glowing synths, to build a highly hypnotic, driving groove, churned by robotic vocalizations of a brisk, irritated, and gloomy, tired essence that fire off in a call-and-response type of communication.

  • Mexico City/Miami  downtempo /Latino /cumbia /dub techno producers Daniel Rincón (aka Nap and Isla label head) & Pablo Arrangoiz (DJ Fitness, El Gusano, Rental Snakes, Crespi Drum Syndicate, etc.), aka Pico “Alegría” from the upcoming s/t EP [ISLA]

Latino Cumbia propulsion meets Dub Techno atmospherics in the Mexico City/Miami-based Chicano production duo’s new collaborative EP, teased by a bubbling downtempo dip that seamlessly fuses off-beat, percussion-laced grooves with deep, spacious dub tones, heavily swaying from side to side, under blinking and ephemeral quirky synth configurations, and echoing warm vocal clips, chugging with a head-down bob into a calm and kaleidoscopic headspace teetering toward oblivion.

  • Madrid-based ambient /atmospheric /drum & bass /halftime /deep techno producer and Eigenblau label head, Truglut – “Faraway” from “Shadow Rollers” EP [Eigenblau]

Madrid’s label honcho finely balances atmospheric rollers and glitchy halftime chops, amidst a heady, immersive interaction of hypnotic, tensile and intricate beats with powdery bass ripples and enveloping, melancholic glowing textures, with spectral sonic hues that drift in and out effortlessly, to explore spacious, deep, and endlessly emotive edges, wafting with a transcendental sonic flair.
