Track Of The Day OPTIK SW
Possibly the best discovery of last weekend, although a couple of weeks late, came in the shape of Optik SW, a German Post-punk band from Münster, founded in 2022.
Following a debut self-titled 4-tracker in 2023, the four-piece will drop their second EP, “Als der Winter einbrach,” on the 1st of June, anticipated by the latest single “Vorstadtromantik / Suburban romance,” a light/shadow journey of self-discovery that examines secrets and shame through a lens of silence, thoughtfulness, and honesty.
Bursting with a new wave / art-rock sound that sizzles throughout with skittish, dry, brittle 6-string patterns, reminiscent of early The Cure, Talking Heads, or even the Feelies, “Vorstadtromantik” is chock full of vibrant melodies, stirring melancholy and jittery, danceable rhythms, electrified and splashed with the fidgety, obsessive wandering of clean, glistening guitar riffs, that scratch the surface, endlessly fueled by tight bouncy drumming and snaky humming bass lines, building with a subtly crisp, droning swell, layered with reedy keyboard flutters, swirling above gripping, wistful emotional vocals, rising into an anxious curtain of fear and longing.
The accompanied visuals by tom_0.4 showcase Optik SW in a variety of day and night settings, shuffling strobing dance scenes with a shadowy performance of Vorstadtromantik and an intimate rooftop sunset, syncing seamlessly with the light/dark moody lyrics of the soundtrack.
Optik SW‘s second EP, “Als der Winter einbrach,” will be released on June 1st via the major streaming platforms.
