WL//WH Track Of The Day: SUN SHINES COLD “Betrayal”

Track Of The Day  SUN SHINES COLD

Sun Shines Cold, the duo of Brian Jordan (Guitars, Vocals, and Keys) and Colan Miles (Bass, Bass vi and Keys), based in the Scottish borders south of Edinburgh, have unveiled the second excerpt, “Betrayal,” from the forthcoming 13-track second album, “Light Fades Into Ruins,” via the English independent label 1991 Recordings

The two-piece tread in the clouded and immersive waters of an expansive, mesmerising, and emotionally charged guitar sound that draws on elements of reverb-drenched shoegaze, searing psychedelia, goth-tinged brooding post-punk, and cinematic post-rock.

“Betrayal,” about fighting the tension, hate, and stagnation within, by growing with the help of God, to be “Right in my soul,” provokes a transcendental descent into a visceral, noisy, hypnotic trance, brimming with simmering tension, to channel the unrelenting sheer murky density of The Black Angels and Warlocks with the mournful shadowy tones of The Cure, filled with a deep sense of struggle, fear, and anger.

Cold, haunting waves of droning, doom-laden distortion stretch out over sonorous gloomy bass lines, along with slapping drum patterns, on which spectral, pained vocals, layered with abysmal gusts from harmfully stabbing wails imbued with resonant despair, ache, echo, and then fall, shifting in tension and momentum with the instrumentation, into a stirring shimmery vortex.

The paired visuals, produced by Mark Sansom, Indigo Six Video Services, blend a strategic use of light and shadow with symbolic architecture and the elements of fire and water to sync with the “Betrayal” theme of the soundtrack. Stormy weather alternates with a dark misty area where a female figure haunts, dances, and mourns. During the part of the song when things lighten up, before the voice falls, color, depth. and expansion take hold. Unfortunately, a flame flickers and then blows out, causing perception to become blurry and inverted. The clip ends with a white X-ray silhouette and a dark shadow switching places, back and forth.

Sun Shines Cold‘s forthcoming sophomore 13-track double album, “Light Fades Into Ruins,” is slated for release, 2xLP 12″ & Digital, on 25th June 2026 via 1991 Recordings
