WL//WH Track Of The Day: DER MIST “Orange” [Disanorak]

Track Of The Day DER MIST

Framed by the spiritual crisis and gloomy introspection of Pastor Ericsson (Gunnar Björnstrand)’s still from Ingmar Bergman‘s “Winter Light” film (1963), the 3-track “Demo” EP is the, soon on cassette, debut release from the newcomer Indonesian post-punk trio Der Mist. The same bleak introspection blended with the early New Order’s dreamy romantic charm that imbues the band’s immaculate and heartfelt devotional approach to the late 70s/early 80s iconic Manchester sound.

Originally dropped in 2025, “Orange” places an orthodox moody array of driving off-beat drum patterns, melody-carrying, sombre basslines and minimal, angular, tinny guitar parts, awash in melancholic, icy synth, around rich, deep, sorrowful male vocals brooding about the past.

Our dear Maulana Akbar of Ultraviolence delivers a “WILD STRAWBERRIES” rework, bridging Joy Division and JAMC, to explore slow-mo, earnest, contemplative ravines of haunted and tormented shadowy realms.

Albeit clearly familiar, it is yet a refreshingly nostalgic effort, as a lingering aural fragrance that never fails to stir emotions.

The band will play at the upcoming JAKARTA POPFEST 2026 on 13-14 June 2026.
