WL//WH New Music Symptomy
Symptomy, the Poznań, Poland-based duo formed in late 2019 by Patryk Lichota and Witold Wolfram, “intoxicated with the aesthetics of retro-futuristic, sometimes a bit melancholic and dark Synth-Pop of the 80s,” follow last year’s debut album, “Good Damage,” with a DIY video by Patryk Lichota himself for “Medicine”, the first single taken from their upcoming sophomore LP “Fear of Good.”
“With industrial rawness, spiritual anxiety and lyrics that are more like a prophetic manifesto than a song, “Medicine” opens the door to the world of “Fear of Good”. Sonically, it is a journey through darkness and light, where electronic asceticism mixes with post-apocalyptic trance,” says Patryk Lichota.
Reminiscent of bygone Stan Ridgway’s dusty exotic Radio transmissions, the urgent, mysterious, and uplifting song combines misty swirling synths with heart-skipping beats and taut bass throbs, to spin and chug under intervals of warm emotional sparkling guitar melodies and spritely chiming twinkles, while powerful baritone vocals, high echoes, and heavy whispers deliver healing “Medicine” to the soul.

The music video accompanying the single is a symbolic story about confronting one’s own fears. We see the “Lighthouse Keeper” – a figure carrying light in the darkness – escaping through dark, post-apocalyptic corridors from demonic creatures. It is an allegory of internal anxiety that cannot be easily tamed. The escape ends unexpectedly – not in a fight, but in reconciliation. The heroine joins her persecutors in a hypnotic dance, in the soothing light of a lantern – a symbol of understanding, acceptance and transformation. “
In the Official Music Video by Patryk Lichota himself, Szeherezada Kondratowicz walks blindfolded through a maze of hallways with a lantern in her hand while feral creatures, created by Wera Kątna and the Chimera Kolektyw, attack her from the doorways. The creative use of lights, shadows, thoughtful costumes and choreography, along with the surprising shadow self finale, syncs seamlessly with the personal transformation of the soundtrack.
