WL//WH Track Of The Day: MODEL COLLAPSE “Silent Path” [Mega]

Track Of The Day MODEL COLLAPSE

Hailing from Brittany, Model Collapse is a new electro cold duo made up of Hugo Gérard (machines, synths, vox) and Tanguy Barot (guitar, vox), fresh from dropping their debut single, “Silent Path,” via fellow French label Mega.

The duo’s sonic palette is a bruising collision of authoritarian rhythms and synth sequences that feel less like melodies and more like half-remembered melancholia. Live, they strip away the polish in favor of something urgent and serrated, a soundtrack for the specific brand of collective anxiety that keeps us up at night.

“Silent Path” showcases the difference between linear, emotionless, programmed thinking and the soulful human experience of feelings and emotions.

The two-piece constructs a functional synthetic mechanism of stark clinical precision and frigid restraint, where the relentless hypnotic propulsion of a thudding drum programming and flickering bubbling low ends counter and interlock with layers of anxious lean synth spirals and insistent gloomy, frosty guitar scrapes, alongside the underlying human intensity of cold dull spoken words, overlain with intervals of lukewarm, softly sung wistful vocals, to convey the lyrical duality of man and machine.

Model Collapse will play live in Brest at Vague Froide with Gwendoline on May 2nd.
