PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Imphal, India dream pop /psychgaze /shoegaze trio, Lo! Peninsula “Song For The Undead” single

After an 8 year long hiatus the Indian outfit have returned with a new single, inspired by their experience of living through the ongoing conflict in Manipur, overflowing with swirling gazey psychedelia, a slow-burning visceral introspection that builds from a bed of slinky bass pulses and hypnotic steady drums over which layers of squealing guitars, capped by trilling cosmic bursts of reverb that sways from a warm drone to a hissing screech with a transcendent soaring edge along with airy, slightly distorted, wistful vocals, powerfully radiating, to saturate the dire, painfilled soundscape with empathy, truth, and hope.

  • Merseyside-based psych /dream pop /indie pop-rock musician Phil Wilson, under The Raft moniker since 2003, shares the songwriting duty with longtime collaborator musician Gaz Elliott, The Raft and Gaz Elliott “Silly Little Boy” single [Shore Dive Records]

Fresh from featuring on the amazing #mindyourmind compilation, the Merseyside pair serves up a captivating folk-tinged indie pop tune, colored with glimmers of Beatles psychedelia, brimming with precious and bright melodic immediacy, spontaneous and refined at the same time. Airy layers of smooth nostalgic vocals infuse a vibrant heartfelt quality that soothes with both penetrating and caressing tones, swaying with the moody, lush and shimmery strummed guitars, at times hued with swirly high tinkling melancholic flourishings, between tension and release.

  • Toronto, ON dream-pop /shoegaze band Azure Rose “Villains” single from forthcoming full-length vinyl “Blue Drops”

Second single release from the newcomer dreamy shoegaze band based in Toronto, also part of the #mindyourmind compilation, rife with The Byrds /Big Star-like descending jangly guitar lines. An homage to nostalgic villains and glory days, the immersive and flowingly cathartic song sparks off a steady stumbling midtempo drive, jam-packed with vaguely lysergic crackling guitars that strum and chime with tear-stained layers of sparkling poignant melodies, echoing around gloomy, remorseful male vocals, struggling to move forward rather than fall backwards.
