PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • DIY Ambient /Dreampop solo project from Thailand, Youthwinelieswish “Midnight Cottage” single

The Thai DIY solo project blends hypnotic, organic ambient textures with stirring, radiant mid-tempo dreampop introspection rich in emotional heft. A beautiful, tear-jerking 10-minute song that unfurls like a narrative about a relationship where, despite a betrayal, a person feels like they can’t walk away. Dreamy vocals anxiously layer with fearful echoes, becoming distorted, angry, and far away, before turning into pure celestial breaths, dotted with reflective, luminescent streaks, rutilant gleams, and a soaring, melancholy-infused synth line, fading into a shivering electro-acoustic droning instrumental coda.

  • Chilean noise pop /shoegaze band Apoyo Diagnóstico – “MNGZ420” debut single

Inspired by MBV, Ringo Deathstarr, Whirr and the current South American scene, the newcomer Chilean duo fuses mid-tempo plodding drum patterns, heavily distorted, thick, crunchy guitar textures, and swirling flutey high keyboard motifs with calm yet vibrant child-like vocals, overcoming the past, and the fear that it instils, by offering comfort and assurance to a loved one.

  • Paris suburb-based 3-piece garage /surf rock band GURL “Winter” 2nd single from upcoming debut s/t album [Le Cèpe Records / Howlin Banana Records]

Upbeat French garage rockers jump the gun with an infectious song about wishing for the Summer to be longer, which buzzes and rushes through an intoxicating and refreshing cocktail of hard-hitting drum beats, energetic buzzsaw guitars and bright pop melodies, to fuel uplifting, nostalgic male vocals, and airy woo-hoo back-ups, brimming with a pumped up sense of freedom and fun, amidst a heartfelt spoken word recollection.
