PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Chicago indie /post-punk /synthpop /dream project led by musician & photographer Eden Sierotnik, COOL HEAT “Stalemate” single from upcoming “Not The Same” EP
The new single from the dream-pop music endeavor of Eden Sierotnik elicits a crepuscular, atmospheric synth-pop, imbued with oneiric and transcendental tones. Steady beats punctuate a rapid flickering, rhythmic, buzzy bass sequence, pulsing against a reflective, shimmery pastel hue synth glaze that floats and swells with languid melancholy alongside sad, dreamy male vocals of angst and regret, agonizing in an internalized “Stalemate” between light and shadow.
- Kassel, Germany, emo shoegaze trio Soft Flowers “Quicksand” first single
German newcomer trio’s debut single leans toward melancholic, introspective Shoegaze with Emo undertones, featuring a warm, sober fusion of pulsating, abrasive fuzz with dreamy textures, laced with shimmering, vibrant tones that simmer and noisily linger throughout. The song drives slow, stumbling drum beats and low grumbling bass lines under a wavy, murky haze of heavy, crunchy distortion, cut through by ringing, pain-filled echoes, to immerse aching, forlorn vocals in the loneliness and fear felt by the loss of a loved one.
- Wellington, NZ alternative /grungegaze /shoegaze trio King Hit “Post divorce clearance sale” single
Always unpredictable, the Kiwi band straddles the moody nuances of emo/grunge/shoegaze while exploring themes of personal turmoil, with erratic, heavily effected sludgy guitar textures, underpinned by shifting, offbeat and crashing drumming and thrumming bass lines, veering from insistent rippling reverberations of shimmery wistful melodies to whirling eruptions of molten, high-pitched wailing distortion, while dim, airy vocals of depressed angst, stay low in response to the fear, confusion and chaos caused by waiting for a marriage to end.

“Mind Your Mind” is a three-volume shoegaze and dreampop compilation released on 17 July via Shore Dive Records, curated by artists Tom Leonard and Shane Speed (Sea of Days) together with Shore Dive Records founder Nico Wardell, with every penny of proceeds going to Mind, the UK mental health charity. Available on vinyl (three volumes) and as a digital download via Shore Dive Records’ Bandcamp.
The project began as a mutual remix project between Tom and Shane, before Nico had the idea to expand it into the full three-volume compilation it’s become, bringing together artists from right across the scene. Tom and Shane both wanted to support Mind, having been affected deeply by mental health issues in their own lives and the lives of those close to them. Artwork throughout is by Steve Cooper.
Why it matters ….
One in four people will experience a mental health problem in any given year, yet too many still face stigma or don’t know where to turn. Mind provides information and support to anyone struggling, campaigns to improve services, and works to change how society talks about mental health.
