PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • France/UK electronic /folk /indie pop new project by Lille‘s Natasha Penot (Grisbi, The Apartments) and Stirling-based Mark Tranmer (GNAC, Vetchinsky Settings, The Montgolfier Brothers), Fragment B “Beautiful Dreamer” single [Vertical Features]

First captivating song release by the Anglo/French project, while writing & recording new material between Stirling and Lille, with a 2-track 7″ single scheduled for this Summer on Brest’s label Too Good To Be True. A heavy, gloomy darkness hovers and kneads, with a hypnotic tension, stirred by soft thudding drum patterns and droning bass pulses, through warm and sparkling expansions of stroked guitar chords and layers of wistful keyboard motifs, to surround dreamy dual male/female vocals with the different sensations experienced by lack of, or engagement in, present moment awareness.

  • Berlin-based 3-piece shoegaze /fuzzy dream pop band Sweetspot “Ice Cream Lover” single

An uplifting ode to ice cream and love, the equally catchy and strident, intriguing second single from the Berlin-based trio, blends Drop Nineteens-like atmospheric grittiness, and Midwest Emo tinkly tones with soaring Frazer-esque female vocals. High-pitched, elated vocals jaggedly cut through a heavy pulsing murk of punchy drums and thick bass throbs, layered with a persistent ringing, distorted friction from screeching, at times whistling, and abrasive guitar riffs, to melodiously glide with love and joy.

  • Kansas City-based 4-piece jangle /soft psych /gentle pop band Eggs On Mars “Good Morning (I Love You)” title track and lead single of the upcoming LP “Good Morning (I Love You)” [Enigmatic Brunch Records]

A delicious soft pop artefact about love, longing, and unity, where steady shifting drums and warm snaky bass pulses trigger subtly glistening, echoing guitar riffs, mellow staccato keyboard bounces, and a final thin, passionate, wistful, crystal clear lead line, fanned by a lush, unhurried colorfulness, to engulf gloomy, anxious vocals with bittersweet feelings of joy, loss, longing, and hope.
