WL//WH Video of the Day: COSMOPAARK “Olive Tree”

Video of the Day COSMOPAARK

Bordeaux-based Shoegazers Cosmopaark, comprised of Clément Pélofy (vocals, guitar), Baptiste Sauvion (drums, percussion), and Wanda Meha (bass, synth, vocals), return to WL//WH with a video for “Olive Tree”, the new single lifted from Cosmopaark’s forthcoming, supposedly more experimental and refined, EPBackyard”, due out on October 18, 2024 via French independent labels  Stellar Frequencies and Howlin’ Banana Records.

“Olive Tree” is a poetic track that evokes childhood memories, appearing fossilized in a past we can no longer change. After a soft and intimate opening, everything seems to brighten. The powerful, dreamy choruses convey the idea that while we cannot alter the past, it no longer belongs to our reality today, allowing us to either mourn it or celebrate it. Multiple dense layers of pianos and synthesizers build up towards the end of the song, evoking a universe reminiscent of Miyazaki’s world, which the band particularly cherishes.

Equal parts dreamy and noisy, the song ebbs and flows seamlessly through swaying crisp percussive grooves, abrasive lilting guitar scrapes, and nostalgic vocals, before a droning flow of loose, immersive distorted expanses take hold, to blur into a disassociative synth-laced tinkling and chiming introspective realm, bursting again with a vibrant fuzz-laden liberating finale layered with emotional piano key melodies, that shine and wash like the healing moment of letting go.

Visually, colorful vintage Pokemon and Nintendo animations blend with the blurry clip of Cosmopaark performing “Olive Tree” to sync with the soundtrack’s transformation. With the help of stop-gap animation, a flower-patterned box filled with childhood mementoes travels outdoors through reflective waters to a burial under a tree whose strong branches reach up to the sun.
