WL//WH Track Of The Day Dummy Ache
After having spent their 2010s rambling together in rowdy Brooklyn-based DIY indie outfits, namely Quiet Loudly, Clouder, Miniboone, Gunfight! and Natureboy, three middle-aged longtime friends apparently rediscovered the urge to still be in a band.
And here is the Portland, Maine-based Dummy Ache becoming reality.
Recorded over two days at Acadia Recording Company in Portland, the band’s upcoming debut album, “Shakers,” is slated for release on November 6, teased by its first single, “Baywatch Nights,” a slow-burning, psychedelic ghost story to be introduced into Dummy Ache’s twisted little world.
Part Shoegaze, part ’90s Indie Rock, part Psych, Dummy Ache takes cues from Yo La Tengo, Galaxie 500, Slowdive, Pavement, and Dinosaur Jr. while carving out something raw, massive, and mesmerizing.
Lyrically about an old friend coming back to town within the framework of a familiar environment, “Baywatch Nights,” channelling glimmers of Galaxie 500’s emotive atmospheric quality, floats with a sublime, earnest trance-like calm, to climax into a distortion-heavy instrumental breakdown.
Never-ending, resonant bass pulses from a poignant bassline, along with hypnotic, steady drum beats, set a slow-building, ghostly, contemplative drift, swathed in transcendent echoes, drawn by spangling layers of expressive, languid guitar melodies, drenched in subtle reverb and profound melancholy, increasingly trembling with high-pitched, aching sharp vibrancy, around the caressing heartfelt warmth of an alluring soulful baritone storytelling. Meanwhile, the feedback unhurriedly creeps in, bursting into an ear-piercing fuzz-laden climactic blast of a wah-wah pedal-fueled, writhing and squawking coda.
