WL//WH Track Of The Day: THE VOODOO SPELLS “Gallows Tree”

Track Of The Day The Voodoo Spells

“Gallows Tree” is the quietly released first single from a brand new Turkish trio The Voodoo Spells, made up of members of Istanbul garage rockers Reptilians From Andromeda, Tolga Ozbey (guitarist, composer and Kafadan Kontak Records head) and his wife Aybike Celik Ozbey on vocals, along with former RFA bandmate Merve Ertuğrul on bass, who plays an off-kilter goth-tinged blend of garage-punk, rock-n-roll and post-punk with slight deathrock undertones.

A stunning debut from a band fumbling in their own music heritage way towards something quite distinctive, “Gallows Tree” kicks off propelled by steadily pounding drumbeats charged by rockabilly akin, jaunty bassine that restlessly pulses round dual female vocals, stabbed by razor-sharp guitar slivers, alternating between sensual, harsh whispers and violent catty screams, to curse lost love and lies in an uncompromising hate-filled rant, falling into urgent breathless abandon.
