PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Makassar, Indonesia 4-piece shoegaze /noise pop /jangle /dream pop band October Rollercoaster “Hello” from the first 2-track single “Hello / We’re Almost There” [Felt & Touch]
Bedazzling, heavily jangled, Dream Pop-infused double A-side single from the Indonesian unit, something humming, warm and familiar but never predictable. “Hello” builds a sweeping, entrancing shimmering mist of reverb-filled guitars, drenched in bubbles and high chimes, that swirls and vibrantly stretches around ethereal female vocals of a colorful piercing yet fading-in-and-out quality, layered with anxious falling cries and distant echoes, to reassure a friend that they are always by their side. More grounded yet equally sharply refulgent, the enthralling “We’re Almost There” on the flip, jam-packed with sparkling, chorus-heavy echoing riffs and rubbery serpentine bass lines, to create a mesmerizing endless nostalgia, wandering through the emotional shifts of the day.
- Los Angeles-based electronic /shoegaze /indie rock /dream pop project led by Molly Falck, aka HYPS “H.A.G.S.” single
The LA band’s new single, with a clear mesmerizing Cocteau Twins flair, expresses feelings of not being good enough, hindering wishes for a happy summer. “H.A.G.S.” (the acronym of “have a great summer”) embraces a gentle melancholic haze across the shimmering, glowing threads of a chilly and wispy guitar-built heavenly realm, as layers of lush, insecure, ethereal vocals glide atop, amid bursts of distorted electricity, conjuring a sense of comfort strained by fear, angst, and yearning.
- Toronto‘s post-punk /Britpop /shoegaze /indie rock five-piece Next Week’s Washing “Clear Eyes” single
Toronto‘s Indie Rockers build an electrifying combination of vibrant and sweeping shapeshifting guitar work with Britpop-esque melancholic melodic hooks, revolving around airy and sparkling yet energetic and distorted riffs that vigorously billow over wistful, anxious male vocals, obsessively longing, with gloomy backups and uplifting spoken words, to explore perception, awareness, and clarity through a lens of self.
