Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – FEBRUARY 2024 – #05-24
PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Moscow-based shoegaze trio LIFE ON VENUS “Homewards” – One of the most memorable albums from 2022, Life On Venus‘ third LP finally gets its well-deserved Ltd.Vinyl Edition release via Netherlands-based label Automatic Music.
“A multifaceted sound rooted in the past, comfortably set in the present, yet ceaselessly striving toward some esoteric time portal that overlooks somewhere, up there, in a timeless deep starry space”
- Sydney-based indie pop /slowcore /shoegaze /dream pop 5-piece band Ultracrush “Summer Camp” single
A welcome return after about two years for the dream-pop unit from Sydney with their intricate emotive guitar-laden sound made of clean and seamless layerings of crystalline chords, driving rhythms, with recurrent tempo changes, and calm vocal delivery, of sublime melodic bent. A lush, shiny and rippling carpet of twinkling arpeggiated guitar melodies that unfold, wander and suddenly swell, fueled by nimble drums and warm pulsing bass lines, adorned with sombre fluid synth motifs, on which float mellifluously downcast vocals aching in gentle sad obsessions wrapped in a nostalgic bout of regret and longing.
- Seattle, WA lo-fi /indie rock /dream pop /shoegaze duo RILEY’S MOUNTAIN “Weaving” single
“Weaving” is the new single, more or less two years from the Seattle‘s duo self-titled debut EP, imbued with classic early 90s shoegaze shoegaze, teetering between shimmering hazy parts of dreamy lethargic introspection, and balmy bursts of dense buzzing layers of fuzz-out distortion, to overwhelm sad piercing vocal dreaminess with weighty yet subdued emotional strains of angsty romance.
- San Francisco lo-fi dream-pop duo Michael Ramos (Tony Jay) and Karina Gill (Cindy), FLOWERTOWN “The Ring” from the upcoming vinyl 12″ album “Tourist Language” on Paisley Shirt Records
A persuasive and unmistakable all-pervaded entrancing misty concoction of intimate blurred emotions, enveloping melancholy and subtle restlessness, “The Ring” weaves murky, hazy, and disconnected clouds overlie obsessive slightly scraping strummed guitar riffs laced with wistful sparkling distorted resonances, underlaid by pulsing bass lines, and light lilting tambourine shakes, to surround soft angsty vocals, asking another to stay true to a promise, with nagging grey doubt.
