Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips #34

PICKS OF THE WEEK:
  • Melbourne, Australia jangle/guitar rock 4-piece GRANDSTANDS “Some Might Say” from the sophomore album “I Love That You Want To Live Here Too”

It took four years for the Aussie band to repeat their brilliant debut album “Stranger” replete of their distinctive laid-back and disenchanted jangly guitar-pop. Nothing seems to have changed, even if this time all members contributed to the songwriting, once again a handful of enchanting tunes, on which stand out “Ground Doesn’t Move”, “Been Thinking” and my fave, the Oasis-like, yet just only in the title, “Some Might Say” made of twinkling arpeggiated guitar melodies and slightly abrasive chords, marked in easy-going rhythms, as beautifully tragic and sad anodyne falsetto vocalizations exhale and expand in breathless angst, like a somber and dreamy Neil Young on jangle mode.

  • Russian psychedelic/dream pop/shoegaze band from Sakhalin, Sleep Overload “Close Your Eyes and Relax”

Clattering and energetic off-tempo beats ricochet through airy ethereal atmospheric caresses, as shimmery auras of ringing guitar and enveloping swooning synth expansions relax and awaken the senses in an energizing flight of soothing and refreshing harmony, suffused with magic and mystery. Dreamscape goodness from North Pacific sonic craftsman.

  • Chilean dark psychedelic/dream pop/post-punk/shoegaze duo SEATEMPLES “Primavera Negra” from the sophomore album “Trópicos” on Icy Cold Records in cooperation with Manic Depression Records & Swiss Dark Nights.

Straddling the thin line between brooding post-punk and darkened psychedelia with atmospheric strains of shoegaze and dream-pop, the second LP by Chilean duet is a sinuously ghostly yet shimmering gripping drive, as much melancholic and melodic as it is nostalgic and groovy, that effortlessly triggers and evokes intense emotions.
