WL//WH Video Of The Day: AFTER THE SIN “Shadow Zone” (Official Video)

Video Of The Day AFTER THE SIN

Formed in 2018, Poznań-based band After the Sin delivers a fresh modern take on the 1980s melancholic atmospheric dark sound, set at the intersection of dark wave, cold wave, and post-punk.

After the acclaimed debut album, “Echoes,” in 2023, the Polish trio, made of Natalia Kołodziej aka Nana (vocals, keyboards, lyrics, visual identity), and founding members Andrzej Szymko aka Oland (vocals, bass guitar, keyboards, compositions), and Tadeusz Piekarski aka Thad (guitars), unveils an Official Video, by Natalia ‘NANA’ Kołodziej herself, for “Shadow Zone”, the first single from the upcoming second full-length.

Lyrically, the song explores the themes of sleep paralysis, anxiety, and the blurred boundaries of the midnight gloom. The composition remains true to the band’s signature style – a fusion of cold synthesizers, raw basslines, and atmospheric dual vocals, deeply rooted in post-punk and dark wave aesthetics.

Set in cold, shady psychological moods, the song throbs through slapping hypnotic beats and anxious, crisp bass lines layered with the sinister inquisitive blanketing buzz of glowing synths alongside tinkly, uncanny key stabs around a dual vocal interplay between magnetic, shivering male whispers and fragile, frightened female worry, trapped inside the “Shadow Zone.”

The Official Video, by Natalia ‘NANA’ Kołodziej herself, uses an imaginative combination of symbolic imagery to display the nightmarish condition expressed by the soundtrack. The clip begins under the reflective glow of a pink-tinted full moon, where a woman with inverted eyesight lies restlessly awake in bed before descending a stairwell into a red mist-laden inner realm. Then, multiple black hands pull her down into the unconscious waters whilst dark snakes of transformative hidden wisdom sliver over her body, searching for the root of the anxiety-inducing energy.
