WL//WH Track Of The Day: ECHO FANTÔME “Lovers&Freaks”

Track Of The Day    ECHO FANTÔME

The Breton DIY duo Echo Fantôme from Rennes debuted last June with the 4-song EP, “Détours”, infused with sober and profound melancholy and charmingly glum melodic sensibilities, interlacing the dark colours of Factory Records-style Post Punk, moody Coldwave grays and catchy electronic French pop.  Sonic hues fully represented by the new 2-track single, “Lovers&Freaks / Soleil Noir”.

Laced with New Order and The Sound undertones, “Lovers&Freaks” talks about getting into a deep relationship with nothing to fear except the end.

The song wobbles on driving thumping drum patterns, along sonorous, broody bass pulses, churning incessantly, with a push and pull of meandering jagged, slightly abrasive, piercing guitar lines, layered with shivering misty synth tones, weeping and sizzling around intense male vocals of earnest allure and passionate fire.

The atmospheric, surreal and claustrophobic synth-laden “Soleil Noir” combines nervously pulsating tinkly low ends, eerie high glows, and desolate glistening guitar wails with French language, husky sensual male vocals strained with haunted dread.
