Porcelain Dancer, the Greek solo dark music project of Athenian artist Yiannis D, unveils a DIY video for “The Cremation/In Memory Of”, the final song on the three-track EP “Tokio Tapes,” via Slow Decay.
The first two mid-tempo darkwave songs of “Tokio Tapes” set ideas of emptiness, a fondness for the endless night, seeing through lies and the hatred and abandonment that follow within a dark, brooding expansiveness that immerses and dazzles with icy, melancholic synths, deeply emotional vocals, and lush, dark, glowing atmospheres.
On the other side, the closing, “The Cremation/ In Memory of,” is a slow, heart-rending atmospheric dirge that explores the denial and loss of identity stemming from the end of love. It unfolds like a broken lullaby with a hypnotic, poignant orchestration of warped romantic strings that glow and resonate, sad and dry, in the agonizing darkness, layered with rich, wistful melodies, beneath which trembling low end drones add a sullen foundation, while swelling doom-laden pulses dully stab a heartfelt mournful vocal pain that gradually fades into the intense flow, leaving a piercing feeling of desolation.
A soul-stirring DIY video for “The Cremation/In Memory of,” performed, directed, and produced by Porcelain Dancer himself, casts a symbolic red light over a moving interpretive dance to evoke the loss and grief of the soundtrack. A trace overlay breaks away from the scarlet sequence like a spectral shadow to walk through a colourless realm of crumbling ruins, a ceremonial altar, and a tomb in a graveyard. Lastly, a cross-adorned stained-glass window foreshadows hope amidst the tragic suffering.
