PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Dream pop /Jangle Pop /Shoegaze duo of Swiss multi-instrumentalist and composer Andy Jossi (The Churchhill Garden) and Los Angeles-based vocalist and lyricist Gretchen DeVault (The Icicles, Voluptuous Panic, and The Francine Odysseys), The Blue Herons “Sleepy Town” single [Shelflife Records]
Coming nearly six months after the transatlantic duo’s debut album, here is another dazzling jangly pop bliss. An urgent rush of brisk drumming and warm, serpentine bass pulses interplay with tinny strums and crystalline chiming guitars, in ceaseless flux with one another, to build a swirling, kaleidoscopic thrill of stirring melancholy atop lush, expressive female vocals, uplifting with layers of heartfelt emotions.
- Italy/UK post-punk /trip-hop /dream pop duo Gluecose “Keep Them In” second single
Newcomer duo centered on a dreamy yet tormented atmospheric sound, into which Trip-hop, as in the closing part of this latest single, Shoegaze and Post-punk elements are merged from time to time. A moody, hypnotic mid-tempo song meanders through harsh, twinkling, progressively distorted guitar melodies laced with desolate, ghostly synths to create edgy and droning swathes of gloom and doom against lush, emotional, melancholic female vocals weighted with longing and regret, bringing forth feelings of angst and frustration at the thought of keeping dreams inside, rather than sharing them with a friend.
- New Jersey atmospheric shoegaze /dream pop project composed of Travis Trevisan and Christina Hernandez, Slow Salvation “Wait Around Another Day” single [Velvet Blue Music]
Slow Salvation returns with an outtake from the Dream Pop duo’s last album, “Gemini”. Crested by circling, droning, tremolo reverberations, joined occasionally by the wistful ruminations of twinkling guitar melodies, layers of breathy, ethereal vocals glide atop unhurried shuffling drum beats and subtly distorted, hazy textures, to evoke a sense of fragility and hopelessness fused with moments of euphoria.
