Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – DECEMBER 2023 // JANUARY 2024 – #01-24
PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Minato City, Japan alternative /shoegaze /noise rock band BLOOD PICK ME “Confusion” single
Japanese noise shoegaze collective’s end-of-2023 single stuck a fine balance between abrasion and introspection, darkness and light, tension and release through a noisy haunting ethos of fluttering droning distortions and icy echoing ripples, fueled by heavy thumping drum beats, and obsessive hissing high hats, whilst angsty and dreamy dual vocals stew under a heavy trembling veil of dark anticipated confessions, swaying, aggressively with bursts of slicing burning guitar riffs and sinister high-pitched melodies, into a heavy duress of romantic “Confusion”.
- Wilmington, NC home-recorded noise rock /shoegaze solo project Surfgoth “Scene” from 2-track “Abject” single
As often happens, Wilmington, NC is musically well represented, even twice this week with the excellent single from Lauds, joined by the one-man project Surfgoth, which after the mesmerizing Jangly Dream Pop single together with Orchid Mantis at the start of 2023, returns more distorted and discordant to imbue heavy grungy mists from obsessive grating, fuzzed-out guitar riffs, underpinned by meandering bass lines and tumultuous drum beats, raining down upon lost dreamy vocals, to drown out a heady “Scene” of angst and gloom.
- Atlanta, Georgia-based ambient /post-rock /dream pop /shoegaze solo project Slo Moon “Parallels” single
Atlanta‘s atmospheric shoegazer starts the new year with a mesmerizing boundless aura of rarefied melancholy that radiates placidly upon a chilly, ethereal veil of blurry sparkling and radiant melodies hover icily above deep trembling bass lines and soft marching beats whilst soft layered vocals, drowned in agony and ecstasy, fall and radiate into deep emotional introspections.
