PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Atlanta, GA ambient /shoegaze /dreampop /dark wave multi-instrumentalist Brent Collins, Slo Moon “I Want You” single

The new single by the Atlanta‘s musician explores the lights and shadows cast by Shoegaze, Dark Wave and Dream Pop sound patterns, that blur in an immersive, ghostly and goth-soaked dimension, fueled by a mechanical pulsating and rumbling electronic heartbeat, in which echoing whirls of desolate synths and dire sparkling guitar melodies, achingly sway around lost, haunted vocals, emotionally holding on to love in the darkness

  • UK psych /indie rock band formed in 1999, led by Jason Pegg, Clearlake “One Of A Kind” (originally written in 2008) from the upcoming unreleased remastered 4th LP “Dark Blue”

I came across Jason Pegg’s name recently, although I didn’t immediately connect it with the Brighton-based Clearlake he fronted since 1999. The quartet has made a name for themselves with three acclaimed albums between 2001 and 2006 via Domino Recording Co., which I still carefully own, replete with both dreamy and noisy vibrant guitar rock streaked with vivid shoegaze, psychedelic, and Britpop facets, seamlessly showcasing a nuanced, refined songwriting with a distinctive melodic flair and stirring lyrics. The band suddenly split up, leaving behind a final, unfinished album called “Dark Blue”, finally on the verge of being released, teased by the third Kinks-inflected excerpt originally written in 2008, that wanders through wander with a swaggering array of groovy chugging, abrasive riffs with expressive vocal charm, convincing someone someone who is having a hard time that “You’re One of a Kind.”

  • Marseille, French bedroom pop /c86 /synth-pop /jangle /indie pop DIY solo project of Olivier Boutry (also part of Tales Of The Moon), Few Border “Old Fashioned” from “The Fire Within” EP

New bright in every respect, four-tracker for the French one-man indie-pop project chock-full of his distinctive, equally chilly yet emotional guitar embroidery, that opens and closes in urgent up-tempo fashion, noteworthy the almost anthemic inspirational closer “Find Someone.” “Old Fashioned” instead rolls and stumbles under a crackling and sparkling sun-dazzled canopy, woven by weeping, jangling guitar melancholy, while wistful, slightly anxious, sentimental male vocals dream of living a retro lifestyle with a loved one, amidst the comfort of poignant, brassy blows.
