PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Indonesian indie /noise pop band New Capital “Highschool” from the single “Highschool/Girls” [sundaysnacks] Indonesian C86 /fuzz /noise pop band D O R M I C E “Big Joke” from “Big Joke” EP [sundaysnacks]

First two cassette releases for a new Indonesian DIY label, sundaysnacks. Concise, rough feedback-drenched C86-tinged mid-tempo anorak-pop from D O R M I C E, shaking at times with fuzz garage inflexions and vaguely 60s harmony vibes. Gloomy, nostalgic baritone male vocals aloofly sulk and caustically long under noisy guitar drones, swathed in a sense of alienation. A couple of infectious chunks of driving late 80s/early 90s melodic Noise Pop a la Husker Du or Superchunk from New Capital.

  • Saguenay, Quebec-based new wave /shoegaze /jangle /dream-pop band Minuit Phosphène “Triangle de feu” single

Quebecois pop unit returns with their buoyant and brightest release to date, a fate-filled song about relighting the fire triangle. Lively, hopeful, female vocals glide up and down, amidst falling cries, over a dizzying hazy trail of brisk rhythms, sinuous pulsing bass lines, glistening guitars and swirling wistful spirals of glowing synths, with boundless urgency and no fear.

  • Düsseldorf, Germany dream pop /shoegaze quintet Attic Ocean “Aurora” second single from the upcoming EP “I promise I’ll try everyday”

Praised by the Shoegaze/Dream Pop aficionados lately for their songwriting qualities and captivating live performances, the German five-piece’s new single, written in the wake of a profound personal tragedy, deals with continuing to live through grief and loss. Effortlessly combining airy sparkling ambience, sheets of buzzy distortion and ethereal vocals, the song fully breathes, weaving light and heavy, as glistening and fuzzy guitar textures over steady bass pulses and shuffling drum beats, to surge, with high-pitched, billowing emotions, around wistful layers of fragile and frantic female vocals, longing to hear “Aurora.”
