PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- California-based Doomgaze /Shoegaze band Tired Eyes “Empty” second single off their upcoming first EP “No Flowers on My Grave”
California’s doomy shoegaze newcomers array Whirr-esque heavy, loud yet expressively melodic guitars, amidst raw fuzzy reflective strums and urgent, emotionally drenched waves of abrasive buzzing distortion, flecked with screechy ripples and excruciating high ringing wails, to menacingly swell over gloomy, numb male vocals, lagging in an endless aching loop of hopelessness.
- Australian bedroom shoegazey /dream pop solo project Flindal “Boogeyman (feat. rocket rules)” single
Aussie moody bedroom dreampop composer Flindal teams up with fellow singer Rachael of Melbourne‘s band rocket rules for a cushiony homage to an era of revelry, self-indulgence and nuisance. “Boogeyman” places light, tinny programmed beats to shuffle along with deep bass bulges, layers of wistful, anxious keys and glistening ethereal guitar melodies, while gentle translucent synth washes swirl around a vibrant, dreamy male/female vocal interplay, weaving breathless longing with fragile angst.
- Bern, Switzerland indie rock /psych /dream pop duo SILVER FIRS “Linen and Tears” single [Oh, Sister Records]
An intimate ode to love and a lullaby that energizes rather than sedates, at least for singer Elmiger’s young daughter; the vaguely psychedelic rocking song that hints to early The Go-Betweens’ clean, fluid bass-guitar textures, blends steady dynamic drums, and crisp round bass lines with lively swaying strummed riffs, wandering, wistful glowing keyboards, and bubbly hollow chimes to swathe wispy calm vocals, turning to vital angst with high airy backups, in a comforting sense of urgency and all-encompassing support.
