Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – APRIL #17-23

PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Boston, MA dream pop /shoegaze /psychedelic pop collaborative band led by Reuben Bettsak (Ex-Hyena) featuring Spenser Gralla (of Sweeping Promises), Emerald Comets “Autumn Vehicle” 2nd single from the upcoming EP “Castle Inside”

The second single by the Boston-based project, this time in collaboration with Spenser Gralla, departs from the blend of Dream-Pop and Shoegaze of the previous one, encapsulated in a surreal and kaleidoscopic bubble of 60’s-tinged Psychedelic-Pop, somehow echoing Zombies and The Electric Prunes, aroused by vibrant glittery keyboard flourishes, amid a syncopated heart-beating bed of resonant vivid rubbery bass throbs and shimmery guitar strums, to bloom and flicker atop a drowsy vocal confession, shifting midway through with bright mercurial melodies and stringent strains into a swaying clapping mesmerizing, staggering ride to awaken the senses and bring hope.

  • Malang, Indonesia shoegaze /indie rock 5-piece CROUD “Hun’s addiction” from 2-track “DEMO MMXXIII” on Haum Entertainment

Debut ‘demo’ single for Indonesian noisy shoegaze noise unit Croud delivers a soaring, raging, ‘sandblasted’ wall of sound ala Swervedriver with Hum/Quicksand heady space-rock nuances, rife with angsty romantic introspection that erupts through heavily distorted mists from relentless stringent fuzzed-out guitar riffs, vibrating bass lines, and rambunctious drum beats to surround, interspersed with achingly searing high-pitched leads, sad dreamy vocals, imbued with intoxicating longings from endless desire.

  • Charlotte, NC post-punk /jangle /dream pop band WINE PRIDE “Lone Flyer” from the upcoming s/t album on Crafting Room Recordings

Although the dreamy and nostalgic guitar pop sound, amidst moody bass pulsations, synthetic rhythm patterns, shimmering reverbs, and jangly surf-tinged inflections, is well familiar, the band tackles it with freshness and distinctive melodic sensitivity so as not to be predictable at all. Self-dubbed as ‘anxious rock performed by day dreamers’ the first glimpse from the LP unwinds a lonely-breaking romance echoing through a meandering, twinkling thread of reflective guitar melodies, laying on the lilting sway of sad throbbing bass lines, and cymbal-charged nimble drum beats, to carry wistful, angsty vocals through the distressing realization that at the end we are “Flying Alone.”
