Video of the Day LEMONDAZE
After a promising debut four-tracker in 2021, Cambridge gaze rockers Lemondaze return with the first foretaste, the new single “o(type)”, from the band’s forthcoming sophomore EP, “Subtext”, due this Autumn, via the recent affiliation with UK independent label Venn Records, to finally capture the unabated, visceral energy of their live sound.
The song is accompanied by an evocative video directed, produced, and edited by Bradley Davies and cinematographed by Harry Wheelwright.
Initially inspired by Slowdive, MBV, Radiohead, and Wolf Alice, the four-piece fuses 90s-tinged Shoegaze and Alternative Rock elements streaked with Post Rock and Grunge undertones, always characterised by a stylistically miscellaneous approach, where evocative and immersive atmospheres seamlessly provide a counterpoint to louder and abrasive parts.
Haunting, stormy, and romantic, “o(type)” explores moody, sensuous, dark landscapes, built by densely layered, slow waves of droning guitar distortion, stirred by persistent, heavy plodding drum beats and thick bass lines, to ring out achingly emotional squeals and languid, ethereal static, through a swirling glowing haze over dreamy, heartbroken female vocals, anxious longing until a dramatic interlude of ghostly male spoken words evokes an ecstatic burst of relief, “you’re still there.”
Lemondaze performs “o(type)” outside, in a beautifully dark environment of time-lapsed natural elements to sync with the suspense of the soundtrack. The thoughtful use of light and shadows, as well as the fine-tuning of fast/slow speeds, and poetic symbolism by Bradley Davies and Harry Wheelwright perceptually brings out the liminal tension expressed in the lyrics.
