WL//WH Video Of The Day: CONTRE JOUR “Spiral” (Official Video Clip)

Video Of The Day  Contre Jour

Formed in 2007 as Neptüne, inspired by the music from the ’80s with a ’90s rock flair, by Roxane Benassaya (Nü, Engines Of Malice), Christophe Méoni (Garçons Coiffeurs), and keyboard player Grégory Ettori with a DIY self-titled full-length debut, the Nice-based band switched their name to Contre Jour with the addition of guitarist Emmanuel D’Auzon (Garçons Coiffeurs) in 2010, releasing two further albums in the 2011-2013 period via the Infrastition label.

After 11 years without a new video and a decade-long hiatus, Roxy (Vocals), Christof (Bass, Synth, Prog), and Manu (Guitars, Instruments, backing vocals) return as a trio with their eighth self-produced video clip by Greguy Léodocard for the new track “Spiral.”

A sentimental letter to an old friend, “Spiral” exudes an evocative and haunting atmospheric darkness that embraces repetitive and stiff drum hits that dully tap murky, sinister low-end melodies, throbbing and creeping beneath a swirling, eerie blanket of slightly discordant, piercing effect-filled guitars, to reverberate and shriek around the magnetic pull of restless, bitter, and helpless female vocals, lost and brooding in a re-emergence of dangerous passions.

The visuals, shot at L’Altherax in Nice by Greguy Léodocard, begin with the band wearing retro formal black and white attire, such as black ties, elbow gloves, page boy caps, and a stunning sequin gown, under the dramatic lights and shadows of a moody Cabaret ambience. Then, the strategic lighting of Christophe (Altherax) shifts to neon and Contre Jour, along with their close friend Julien, are now performing “Spiral” in edgy 80s street clothes, to sync symbolically with the dueling timelines of the soundtrack.
