Track Of The Day The Suncharms
Recalling a captivating Halloween related single similary titled, “Monster Club”, from around 6 years ago, the, since the 2010s, rejuvenated Sheffield indie pop veterans The Suncharms return, just in time for the seemingly most creepy and dark period of the year, with the Halloween Version of “Monster to Me”, the first foretaste of the forthcoming new third album, aptly named “Darkening Sky”, via Illinois‘ independent label Sunday Records.
The South Yorkshire outfit fronted by vocalist Marcus Palmer, alongside guitarists Matt Neale and John Malone, bassist Richard Farnell and drummer Chris Ridley, gloriously active between 1989 and 1993, with a couple of understated EPs as labelmates of early Catherine Wheel, a Peel Session and some memorable gigs under their belt, have over time informed and enriched their sound with dreamy, gazey, jangly and atmospheric nuances, with less sparkly, more shadowed contours of worn-out charm.
Equal parts dark brooding intensity and soaring soul, the song drags sinuously through slow slung drum beats, lilting crisp, tinny snares and moody bass pulses, torn out by the slightly abrasive distorted haze from bristly smoldered riffs to stretch out and whimper, layered with plaintive devotional Terry Edwards-like trumpet blows, bleeding poignant, cinematic thrills onto the sad intimacy of nostalgic, bitter vocals, haloed by spectral whispered echoes, crooning about what began as a teenage love affair that turned monstrous after the beauty faded.
