Track Of The Day RANK
Rank, Lyon, France’s renowned local Post-punk staples with around a decade and a half of activity behind them, returns, after a long break since their latest LP, “Black Frame,” in 2021, with the new single, “Unkind,” to announce Rank’s fifth studio album, “Heaven” due out on June 20th.
The four-piece provides a visceral and evocative refreshing take on the late 70s/early 80s dark sound tropes, juxtaposing straightforward, sharp and fierce parts with more atmospheric and introspective ones, all rife with heartfelt, edgy emotional heft.
The boisterous “Unkind”, about breaking free from self-constraints and becoming like an animal, unleashes unrelentingly vibrant, loose drum beats along side sonorously churning and humming bass lines, lashed by sinewy and barbed wire guitar riffs, ripping with restless aching intensity against unbridled, restless vocals, rising into pain-filled, anxious screams, amidst a late interlude of reflective spoken words that become increasingly more urgent with each breath, before the whole band erupts into a reiterated group chant of “I don’t want to be a primal beast.”
Keep up with RANK:
