PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Portland, OR shoegaze /indie /dream pop duo songwriter Spen Oliver and Lillian Christopher, Found Space “Nostalgia” single
Many over the week have pointed out the Portland duo’s captivating new single to me, which will surely have gotten the attention it deserves by now. Hypnotic and immersive, suffused with an enveloping, subtly psychedelic Stone Roses-like groove that throbs loosely on sinuous shuffling percussions, warm, deep bass lines, and distorted, rustling vortices of electro-acoustic guitars and lustrous keyboards, to crash and resonate over smooth, airy, elated vocals, streaming with high-droning stutters, wishing for new experiences, rather than longing for the same old happenings.
- Brisbane/Meanjin-based dreampop /shoegaze outfit Ultra Material – “Supine” from V/A “Gazed and Bemused: Hazy Sounds from the Meanjin Underground” vinyl 12″ LP compilation [4000 Records]
As proof of a vibrant local scene rich with bands dedicated to Shoegaze-adjacent sounds, the Meanjin (Brisbane) independent artist-led record label 4000 Records showcases a stunning kaleidoscopic 12-track compilation of well-known and lesser-known groups, all to be enjoyed in a variegated and fascinating cross-section of the many facets of the noisy and melodious, reverb-drenched “Beautiful Sound.” I underlined the mesmerizing noisy/dreamy delivery from Ultra Material ’cause they’d been missing for a long while; still, every group is absolutely worthy of mention, and what sets it all apart from most collections is the fact that every track is absolutely previously unreleased and not a superfluous leftover, which isn’t often the case, in addition to being adorned with a tasty limited-edition colored vinyl. Heartily recommended!
- Chicago doomgaze /nugaze /grungegaze duo NIGHT GLARE “Thousand Eyes” debut single
Brand new project from Chicago, whose debut single, unlike the grungegaze / heavy shoegaze tags, wallows in a sad and bare atmospheric expanse, cloaked in contemplative and nostalgic plaintive tones, of subtly distorted shimmery guitar textures and searing leads, to surround soft heavy male vocals, achily drowning in a dying mist-strewn sea of lost dreams.
