PICKS OF THE WEEK:

  • Sydney, Australia 6-piece shoegaze band Trillion “Night City” from the debut album “Feel Alright”

Australian squadron from Sydney leans into the equally dreamy, and primarily, noisy fringes of classic Shoegaze patterns, deftly harnessing its massive arsenal of 3 guitars, double emotive, at times euphoric, airy vocals, steady dynamic drums, and warm pulsing bass lines to create a bright and colourful huge multi-textural outflow of seven tracks that cascade into dense, yet carefully built, subtly abrasive loud walls of sounds swept in reverb, groovy fuzzy distortions, melancholic heart-rending introspections, and wide-open free space-out horizons. A heady distillation of melodic sensibility, sound architecture accuracy, and throwback allure, let’s lose ourselves in the blissful buzzing haze.

  • Tallinn, Estonia shoegaze /dream pop collective Pia Fraus “Nothing Returns” single [Seksound Records]

The highly-cherished veteran Estonian collective, some years back cult object of devotion from many aficionados, returns with an effervescent and buoyant new song that blends urgent rhythms, meandering, moody post-punk bass lines, shimmery washes of fuzzed-out Shoegaze guitars, swirling screechy overlaps, and energetic noisy riffs, colored by tinkly piano key rolls and angsty vocals, trying to find a balance of trust and love, fear and confusion, ignorance and wisdom.

  • Dublin, Ireland-native indie rock /guitar pop /folk duo David Long (Into Paradise) and Paul Page (Whipping Boy), aka The Sentimental Tourists “Happy Beatle” from “The Sentimental Tourists” (EP) [Subjangle]

Released during the Summer period, right when I was unable to feature it, the ever-attentive Subjangle label will drop the CD edition of the new collaborative project between Dublin cult musicians David Long, former Into Paradise frontman, and Paul Page, ex-Whipping Boy guitarist, marking for the latter his first foray into music in 25 years. Emotional, nostalgic, and tear-jerking, the “Underground Class of ’89” duo serves up four intense, heartfelt, stripped-down songs, built on acoustic folk-tinged strums, sparkly reverberated arpeggios, angular and subtly distorted riffs, to carry earnest, wistful vocals through introspections on life, insight, longing, and loss, whilst deeply pulling at the heartstrings in a timeless journey, between shadows and flashes of hope.
