Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – JULY #29-22

Jean Marais in ‘Orphée’ directed by Jean Cocteau, 1950

PICKS OF THE WEEK:
  • Stockholm, Sweden indie /dream pop band LILAC “Wither” first track from the debut album “There’s someone else in my skin”

In times of unexpected, welcome comebacks, the Swedish band Lilac, which were made known around 2017 thanks to a couple of enticing EPs, return with a brand new single, even announcing their long-awaited debut album. A 90s-inspired wistful dream-pop/shoegaze sound ala Real Estate or Alvvays, filled with shimmering reverberations and jangly crystalline nuances, cloaked in sun-hazed bittersweet melodies and a melancholic sense of nostalgia, while keeping a carefree flair. “Wither” bursts with an emotive melodious uplift of shimmering strums and sparkling, billowing wistful guitar melodies to enshroud dual airy angsty male/female vocals in sweeping surges of mercurial whims arousing feelings of urgent restlessness and hopeless desire.

  • Leeds, UK & Riga, Latvia based noise-gaze /shoegaze outfit Last Victorian Death Squad “Snow” from the EP “Snow/Starcrossed” on Shore Dive Records

You are sure to always find the fuzzy-pop song that grabs you instantly with every release from the ‘Purveyors of violent noise and blissful melodies since 2017 ‘. The opening “Snow” is a two-minute long noisy chaotic maelstrom of urgent steady rhythms, and frenzied, shivering, squealing guitar distortions enveloped in a blanket of swirling melancholy around the impassioned aching vocal desperation of a lonely soul, whose doubt and longing drive urgent surges of nostalgia and fear into overdrive. Poignant Brit-pop vocal tinged melodic emotive tension with full-bodied swirling guitar riffs in the second track, “Starcrossed“, plus also an unusual cover version of 80s glam heavy rockers Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction, whose I should have a wrinkled dusty vinyl somewhere, a good hint to recover it.

  • Norway/Germany indie /jangle-pop duo of Jørn Åleskjær (The Loch Ness Mouse, Sapphire & Steel) and Sebastian Voss (Nah…, The Fisherman and his Soul), AKA HERR WADE “Askim” from “Altenberge” EP on Platiruma!!!

In the two musicians’ playful challenge to write a song on each of their living locations without ever having been there, “Askim” is a song about Jørn‘s hometown in Norway, written by Sebastian, with nuanced romanticism and heartfelt immediacy, penning an uncanny picturesque lyrical storytelling accompanied by his soft atmospheric vocal delivery over shifting rhythms, romantic winding guitar strums laced with glistening jangly flourishes, soft serene bright synth stabs, decorated with minimal blasting trumpet’s poignant vibrancy, to stir the soul with an unseen beauty, fascination, and love for a faraway place shared by friends.
