PICKS OF THE WEEK:
- Los Angeles–based shoegaze /dream-pop project from multi-instrumentalist Seth Saunar-Pedersen (Edith Pike, Asbestos, Frontier Days), Karenin’s Smile “Temporary” from the upcoming “A Wake Up Call For Eager Lovers” EP [Dandy Boy Records]
The debut solo dream-pop project from Los Angeles–based multi-instrumentalist Seth Saunar-Pedersen teases “Temporary,” a finely intricate embroidery of radiant chiseling Maurice Debank-like guitar work, where plodding percussions along with sinuously rubbery bass pulses drive an hypnotic iridescent flow, infused with shimmering layers of trembling, ethereal, echo-drenched guitars, that feels both intimate and gradually expansive, as deeply sad dreamy vocals, at first supported by gentle celestial caresses, fall, under a heavy burden of loss, into a flat, dull colorless existence.
- L.A.-based Australian neo-folk /shoegaze /dream pop /electronic /post punk project from Griffin James, aka Sans Merit “Doledrines” 1st single from the upcoming second album “Trolley Polly” LP [Knekelhuis Records]
After a critically praised debut album a few years back, Sans Merit, the solo endeavour of Australian musician and composer Griffin James returns with a both crunchy and atmospheric, emotionally intense blend of reflective dream pop introspection and sinewy post-punk moodiness, stirred with a fair dose of melancholy, to build a cold, tumultuous fuzz-drenched grey mist woven with strummed and jangled guitars, where hopeless ghostly vocals, gloomily question what life is all about through a lens of brokenness, waste, and decay.
- Oakland, CA bossa nova /dream pop /indie pop trio Trails and Ways “Young” single
After a 9-year hiatus, the California outfit Trails and Ways, now a trio, returned last year with a captivating low-key single to revive the magic of their laid-back, nostalgic and sparkling bossa-tinged dreamy indie pop, as if no time had passed. Exploring themes of commitment and adulthood, the new tune, “Young,” swings on lush and vibrant, dreamy female vocals, soaring and falling with heartfelt and soulful harmonies, grounded by a beating heart of rich, crisp percussion along with sonorous supple bass pulses, colored by glistening guitars and shiny velvet keyboard tones, imbuing a sense of lively calmness, thoughtfulness, and depth.
