Weekly Shoegaze / Dreampop / Psychedelic / Indie Tips – FEBRUARY #08-23

PICKS OF THE WEEK:
  • Oslo, Norway fuzz noise-pop band led by guitarist and vocalist Christian Dam, The Age of Colored Lizards “It’s Not the Way It Used to Be” taken from the upcoming 4th album scheduled for 2024 via Sotron Records

Reminiscent of the sparkly, overdriving, at times hallucinated, grinding fuzz tone of early ’90s’ Neil Young & Crazy Horse, the new single seethes along slow skipping drum patterns and noisy unnerving abrasive guitar riffs swayed hopelessly to drag high-pitched vocal angst through an obsessive entanglement of disenchanted moods.

  • Richmond, VA/Chicago, IL emogaze/ shoegaze/ indie rock collaboration, Always Other & Triangle Rain Club “Scream” single

The first collaborative single from US young emo shoegazers elicits a frightful, nostalgic tragedy enveloped in warm rippling blankets of pain-fueled fuzzed-out distorted riffs, underpinned by stumbling drum beats along murky throbbing bass lines, to build angsty distressed drama, pulsing around heady layers of an emotional vocal interplay, channeling the lunatic mind games and obsessions found in the infamous slasher movie “Scream.”

  • Late ’80s Hamburg region based cult indie pop 5-piece band and Marsh Marigold label affiliated, The Legendary Bang “Last Night (live)” from the upcoming “The Legendary Bang live EP” 5-track 7″ vinyl on Old Bad Habits Label

Born right in the middle of the thriving late ’80s DIY fanzine scene, Hamburg-based Marsh Marigold was one of the most renowned quality Indie-Pop labels, with a roster enriched, among others, of beloved bands such as Die Funf Freunde, Red Letter Day and The Legendary Bang. The upcoming 7″ vinyl EP, via Athenian label Old Bad Habits Label, is dedicated to this latter, the short-lived German cult five-piece The Legendary Bang, made up of 4 live tracks including the cult hit “Mozzer is Dead” in a 2013 version on the occasion of an occasional anniversary reunion, while the other 3 date back to those early years full youthful energy in versions replete with rushing noisy guitar excitement, while retaining the irresistible melodic quality, closer to the urgency of the Wedding Presents than to Johnny Marr-like jangle guitar embroideries. Possibly proof of an unrepeatable bygone era where the imagination, without a widespread web and nowadays’s social media, used to run, even necessarily, free without brakes. For someone, namely the fans, it will be like having found an unexpected box of old photographs or precious dusty records in the attic, for others, hopefully the youngsters, it will fill the soul as it did for their predecessors, as such heartfelt and timeless pop music will be always bound to encompass generations.
