WL//WH Video Premiere David Long & Shane O’Neill
Inner city Dubliners, childhood friends and renowned stalwart musicians of the 1980s Indie Rock scene, David Long (Into Paradise) and Shane O’Neil (Blue in Heaven), harness the ghosts of Post-punk past with a new double A-side single, “The Return Pt.1 & Pt.2,” featuring the signature guitar work by fellow Irish musician Paul Page (Whipping Boy & The Sentimental Tourists) on “Pt.1”.
Hypnotic, crisp kick-laced drum grooves along with obsessively rippling, moody bass lines, unrelenting pulse under washes of desolate, subdued synth drifts and abrasive, shimmery guitar riffs, to emotionally swirl, clatter and quiver around light and airy, elated male vocals, gliding and then falling into gloom, while exploring the fleeting emotions of love.
The companion video for “Spread Your Arms Like The Sea” syncs blurred footage from the surreal, dadaist and satirical Czechoslovak cult movie “Sedmikrásky / Daisies”, directed by Vera Chytilová in 1966, with the free-flowing momentum of the soundtrack. A transformative psychedelic railway is placed over the lead actresses, one dark-haired dressed in black and the other blonde-haired wearing white, as they dance in a garden next to a fruit tree, giving the vibe of a soft, ‘travelling through’ experience.
The stern reminder and tear-jerker of “Return Pt.2 (Take Art Easy)” is delivered by nostalgic and wistful vocals, grounded on a vivid, vibrant, erratic bed of shuffling percussions, warm bass pulses, echoing emotive keyboard stabs, and choppy guitar slivers, softly singing about embracing intimacy and beauty, in the moment.
